Biography
Jaap Gidding
Jaap Gidding was a multi-disciplinaire Dutch designer. He was active as a draftsman, painter, glass-, wall- and decorative painter, ceramist, goldsmith, jewelery designer, interior designer, monumental artist, textile artist, and mosaic maker.
Gidding had his education at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam from 1902 to 1908. Jaap Gidding followed into his father, grandfather and uncles’ footsteps when he opted for an artistic career. He was trained as a decorator and painter in the family business Gidding & Sons. After his studies, Gidding spent several years in Germany [Munich] from 1908 to 1912, where he worked on stage decorations for the German artist Fritz Erler (1868-1940).
From 1926 to 1930 he worked at the Glass Factory in Leerdam. There he designed a number of vases and decorated them in enamel paint. These vases with the monogram JG are very rare.
In the 1930s he returned to Rotterdam, where he worked from 1936 as aesthetic director at Verffabriek Molijn & Co. During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Gidding was a member of the N.S.B. for several months. And of the Dutch Cultural Council. After the war he continued to work in Rotterdam until 1955, the year of his death.
