Christien Meindertsma
Christien Meindertsma conducts in-depth research into the lifespan and use of products and raw materials for her works. In some cases, the result of her projects can be the record of the process itself. In other cases, her research leads to actual products. Careful research and documentation, themes such as local production and underdeveloped sources characterize her work. Meindertsma wants to expose processes that have become distant before industrialization and encourage a deeper understanding of the materials and products that surround us.
Works such as the Flax Project (2012) and its many side branches are also typical of Meindertsma’s approach: Meindertsma bought an entire crop of flax from a Dutch flax farmer with the ambition to investigate how flax products can continue to be produced more locally.
Meindertsma’s work is part of the collections of MOMA (New York), The Victoria & Albert Museum (London) and the Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rein). She won three Dutch Design Awards (2008) and an Index award (2009) for PIG 05049. The Flax Chair won the Dutch Design Award and Futurum Award (2016). Meindertsma graduated in 2003 from the Design Academy Eindhoven.
